Koh Rong’s Little Sister

Koh Rong Samloem is yet another hidden gem of an island on the Cambodian coast with pristine sandy white beaches, vibrant palm trees offering azure blue waters and plenty of relaxation and investment opportunities.

With Koh Rong now under more extensive development and gaining international attention as a tourist destination and a haven for foreign investment, many seek the more tranquil surroundings of Koh Rong Samloem.

However, a slower pace to live doesn’t mean a quieter place for real estate and land options.

This island runs at a slower pace but still offers tourists and residents various experiences, with different areas of the island having their own unique vibe.

One bay already has luxurious accommodation and lodgings, while others have been carefully though-out for a more family orientated experience, whilst others offer moderate bungalows.

There is something for everyone, from visitors to business owners and retirees looking to buy a house in Koh Rong Samloem and enjoy its tranquillity and hospitality.

Some parts of the island are a favourite with easy-going travellers looking to relax for a while and a beautiful fishing village that attracts backpackers and keen local and resident fishermen and women alike.

For those looking for a full-moon party vibe with less intensity, this happens on several different beaches but not on the scale of its neighbours.

The island consists of 37 kilometres of coastline, with the majority of it being the beach. The island’s western side is unique, with several yellow sand beaches, in contrast to the white sand elsewhere.

Saracen Bay

Saracen Bay is located on the Eastern side of the island and is the most popular with tourists. Its allure is its white sandy beaches and electric blue waters, ideal for snorkelling.

As you move slightly inland, there are some ideal trekking paths through the tropical jungle where you will find breathtaking flora and fauna along with rare birdlife.

As we just covered above, although there are full-moon parties, Koh Rong Samloem is known for being much quieter than its neighbouring islands, which is why the island is commonly known as Koh Rong’s quieter little sister.

Future Opportunity

While the island is undeniably rustic, there is still a fair range of developments in place and currently being proposed and considered by local officials.

Although there are no banks or ATMs yet on the island, money transfer is possible through WING facilities near Orchard Pier. A short boat journey to Koh Rong offers standard facilities where residents typically make a trip once a week.

However, Saracen Bay offers some of Cambodia’s most luxurious high-end accommodation for a rustic little island.

On the other end of the scale, Sunset Beach offers more of a backpackers camping style experience and wooden bungalows with restaurants are found on many of the beaches on the island.

M’Phey Bei, the little fishing village at the north tip, has a range of budget to mid-range accommodation and eateries.

With the government issuing land for foreigners and Cambodian’s alike to invest in, all manner of touristic ideas are on the table including infrastructure to accommodate year-round residents.

One thing of note to people looking to acquire land to build a hotel or resort is the tracts of land available here are substantially larger than those issued on Koh Rong, which is already seeing a steady influx of interest from foreign investors.

The additional space allows structures, whether villas, bungalows, or homes, to be spaced further apart, therefore, giving the beaches a much less crowded appeal.

Of course, given time, this will change, but the ability to start a commercial business with little or no competition or own beachfront property in paradise now at affordable prices is scarce in this part of the world.

At this moment in time, you get the best of both world’s as Koh Rong Samloem is a relaxed paradise but offers many amenities, if not more than other islands with more significant populations.

M’Phey Bei village has enough shops and general supplies to keep residents going. From small shops with DIY supplies, groceries, household goods and snacks, albeit not Western groceries yet, they are available via a boat journey to Koh Rong.

The village centre has a more tourist-oriented minimart where you will find first-aid supplies and other commodities targeted at beach-goers.

Solar Comes to the Island

A solar project has recently begun, touted to be complete during 2021.

The project is being undertaken by a company with experience in solar projects on islands in Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Cambodia, which will provide two stand-alone microgrids.

Initially, the project will look to power Saracen Bay and its residents with future scope for expansion to cover the entire island.

Koh Rong Samloem Real Estate

The island is another unique situation that does not exist in neighbouring countries or the South Asian basin, an almost unspoilt island with white sandy beaches, turquoise blue water and wonderful local people.

The investment opportunity for both commercial or residential is unprecedented. The island is ideal for looking at a long-term land investment, buy a business or retire with your dream beachfront home.

The island boasts ten different beaches, so there is plenty of beach on offer. Often, beachfront land can also have jungle land behind as part of the rent or purchase, opening the door for alternative ideas other than just a beach experience.
